Director of Human Resources
The Company
A PE-backed national fire and life safety platform operating across five distinct operating companies, eight facilities, and multiple states including California. The platform serves diverse end markets — from commercial and industrial fire protection to marine and military vessel safety — and is in an active growth phase through acquisition and organic expansion. Revenue is approximately $30M with roughly 100 employees across locations in California, Florida, Texas, Arizona, and the Southeast.
The Role
This is a foundational HR hire. The person who takes this role will be the first — and for now, the only — dedicated HR professional in the organization that will help define and develop policy and procedures.
The priority is building the foundation that supports growth with labor and wage compliance across a multi-state footprint that includes California operations. From there, you build outward: policies, employee relations, onboarding, performance management, and the infrastructure that supports a growing platform.
The right person for this role wants to put their fingerprints on a growing business.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead labor law and wage compliance across multiple operating companies and states, with strong expertise in California regulations.
• Design, implement, and maintain HR policies across a five-company platform.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for employee relations, addressing concerns, resolving conflicts, and supporting a field-based, multi-site workforce.
• Build and manage onboarding and offboarding processes from the ground up.
• Develop and oversee performance management systems within ADP.
• Provide steady oversight of compensation and benefits programs.
• Partner closely with operational leaders across five distinct business units.
• Proactively identify and mitigate risk across all areas of HR.
• Establish and strengthen HR foundations to support ongoing growth, including acquisitions.
Qualifications & Experience
• Proven multi-state HR experience, with deep expertise in California labor and wage compliance, which is essential.
• Experience as a standalone or first HR hire, with a track record of building HR functions from scratch.
• Background supporting field-based, multi-location teams such as industrial services, field technicians, trades, or similar environments.
• Comfortable operating independently and owning the full HR function in a growing organization.
• Hands-on approach with the ability to manage policy development, employee interactions, and compliance research.
• Familiarity with ADP, particularly in payroll and performance management systems, is preferred.
• Ability to balance strategic thinking with day-to-day execution.
• Willingness to travel to operating locations as needed.
