Our client, a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to ensuring access to nutritious food for communities across California, is seeking a dedicated HR leader. This is a unique opportunity to serve as a solo HR function supporting a passionate team of 40 employees for a well-funded non-profit. Reporting directly to the CEO, this role is both strategic and hands-on — ideal for a professional who thrives in dynamic environments where culture, engagement, and people strategy are as important as compliance and process.
The CEO is deeply committed to employee engagement and culture, making this role a critical partner in shaping the organization’s future. The successful candidate will be approachable, solutions-oriented, and equally comfortable designing strategy and executing the day-to-day, including payroll.
What You Will Do:
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO and leadership team on all HR matters, from strategy to execution.
- Lead employee engagement initiatives and change management strategies to strengthen organizational culture.
- Manage full-cycle HR operations, including recruiting, onboarding, benefits, compensation, leaves, employee relations, and performance management.
- Payroll administration (experience with ADP preferred).
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and update policies as needed.
- Facilitate organizational development, training, and internal communications to support a highly engaged team.
- Partner with leadership on workforce planning, retention strategies, and talent development.
What You Bring:
- 8+ years of progressive HR experience, including generalist and leadership responsibilities.
- Strong background in employee engagement, change management, and organizational culture.
- Knowledge of HR compliance regulations and employment law.
- Experience managing payroll and benefits administration; ADP expertise is a plus.
- Excellent communication skills with a reputation for approachability and trust-building.
- Ability to work independently and balance strategic priorities with tactical execution.
- Passion for advancing the mission of a nonprofit and commitment to inclusivity, collaboration, and accountability.
