Job Summary
Fortis Fire & Safety is seeking a Senior HR Generalist that will have both tactical and strategic responsibilities related to onboarding, employee relations, performance management, and compliance. This individual will work out of our Schaumburg, IL HQ and assists in the development, implementation, and administration of effective human resource policies, procedures and systems that support the objectives of our business partners and the overall organization. The Senior HR Generalist will be a key participant in the development of short and long-term HR objectives consistent with organizational strategy.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Work in conjunction with leadership to create a positive employee relations culture that emphasizes teamwork, safety, customer service, continuous improvement, and high performance.
- Develop, maintain, and present HR KPI dashboards and workforce analytics to leadership, providing data‑driven insights to support decision‑making and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Coach employees and managers on correct interpretation and administration of Company HR policy.
- Assist management in maintaining positive employee relations.
- Assess the internal employee climate, counsel with managers to identify and implement actions that improve or maintain a positive employee relations environment.
- Partner with Chief People Officer and Branch Management when conducting investigations and resolving team member issues.
- Conduct exit interviews and provide feedback to management.
- Represent the company, when needed, at unemployment hearings.
- Support the annual Performance Management and Merit process. Ensure internal consistency in administering these programs.
- Assist local managers with salary and wage administration on an ongoing basis to ensure pay consistency and equity.
- Ensure company is operating in accordance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
- Balance the role of company representative with that of employee advocate. Act as coach and confidant to employees.
- Support the leave of absence process in partnership with HR Coordinator and management to include team member accommodations and communication.
- Develop all employee communications, as needed.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 4+ years of HR experience, preferably in a generalist or business partner capacity with responsibility across multiple HR domains.
- Experience in the construction industry or a similar field, with exposure to workforce environments that include field operations, skilled trades, or decentralized teams.
- Demonstrated experience leading multi-site/multi-state HR operations.
- Demonstrated progressive HR experience, demonstrating increasing responsibility across multiple HR functional areas.
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience with an HRIS platform, preferably UKG, including data management, reporting, and workflow administration.
- Demonstrated experience supporting organizational change, talent development initiatives, or employee relations in a high‑growth or complex operational setting.
- Proven experience with HR reporting and analytics, including the ability to interpret HR KPIs, analyze workforce trends, and translate data into actionable recommendations for leadership.
- Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations, including but not limited to FLSA, EEO, FMLA, ADA, and related compliance requirements; strong ability to interpret and apply HR policies and regulatory frameworks.
- Exceptional communication skills, including strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and consultative abilities, with the capability to influence and partner effectively at all organizational levels.
- Proven ability to build trust and professional credibility, demonstrating sound judgment, discretion, and a high level of integrity when working with sensitive and confidential information.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Teams, Word, and PowerPoint; intermediate-level Excel skills (formulas, VLOOKUP, data manipulation, and formatting).
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with the capacity to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
- Ability to travel to company branch locations as needed, including out‑of‑state travel, to support operational, employee relations, training, and compliance initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional HR certification (e.g., SHRM‑CP, SHRM‑SCP, PHR, SPHR) is a strong plus.
This pay range reflects the compensation rate Fortis Fire & Safety reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of posting. Final compensation may vary based on factors such as experience and skillset. This role is also eligible for benefits including medical, dental, vision, 401k match, pet insurance, short term/long term disability, etc...
Compensation Rate: $90,000 USD - $100,000 USD
This role may require extended periods of sitting or standing, movement around the office or job site, and operation of standard equipment. Physical activities can include reaching, bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting up to 75 lbs. Field positions may involve heavy lifting, working in varying climates (including outdoor conditions), construction or low-voltage environments, and exposure to dust, noise, or confined spaces. Personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required. Some roles may require travel.
