Job Description:
Our client is seeking an experienced and strategic HR Director to lead Human Resources across a growing, vertically integrated structural steel organization. This is a high-impact, hands-on leadership role supporting fabrication facilities, field operations, and corporate teams.
Partnering closely with executive leadership, including the CFO and President, this individual will drive people strategy while also owning the day-to-day HR function. The ideal candidate is a true HR subject matter expert with strong experience supporting both blue-collar and white-collar workforces in construction, manufacturing, industrial, or skilled trades environments.
This role is ideal for a seasoned HR professional who can build scalable HR infrastructure, support business growth, advise leadership on sensitive employee matters, and operate effectively in a fast-paced, field-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Partner with executive leadership to align HR strategy with company growth, acquisitions, and operational expansion
- Support organizational design across multi-site operations, including fabrication shops, field crews, and corporate teams
- Lead change management initiatives tied to business transformation and integration efforts
- Support M&A activity, including HR due diligence, organizational alignment, and post-acquisition integration planning
- Build and refine scalable HR systems, policies, and procedures to support continued growth
- Oversee full-cycle recruiting for both skilled trades and corporate/leadership roles
- Strengthen onboarding and offboarding programs with an emphasis on safety, readiness, and retention
- Develop workforce development, training, and career pathing initiatives
- Partner with operations leadership on performance management in a production and project-based environment
- Serve as a trusted advisor on complex employee relations matters across field and corporate teams
- Champion a culture rooted in safety, accountability, craftsmanship, and operational excellence
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, including multi-state and construction-related regulations
- Oversee payroll coordination, benefits administration, open enrollment, and corporate insurance programs
- Manage key total rewards functions, including 401(k) administration
- Maintain and optimize HR systems, including UKG
- Manage HR-related vendors and external partnerships
- Lead and develop HR support resources, including 1 direct report
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- HR certification required (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR)
- 10+ years of progressive HR experience
- Strong experience with:
- Payroll
- Union environments
- Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs)
- Open Enrollment
- 401(k) Administration
- Corporate Insurance
- M&A / acquisition support
- Prior experience in construction, manufacturing, industrial, or skilled trades environments required
- Previous recruiting experience using LinkedIn required
- Experience with UKG strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of employee relations, compliance, onboarding, offboarding, and performance management
- Must be proactive, personable, organized, and detail-oriented
- Seeking a true HR SME; candidates whose background is primarily administrative support transitioning into HR will not be the right fit
