The HR Director serves as a member of the organization’s leadership team, partnering closely with executive leadership to align people strategy with the organization’s mission, programs, and operational priorities. This role provides both strategic leadership and hands-on execution across all areas of human resources, including talent management, employee relations, compliance, compensation and benefits strategy, and organizational development. The HR Director also serves as the organization’s internal subject matter expert on employment law, benefits governance, and retirement plan oversight, ensuring the organization maintains strong people practices while managing risk and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead full-spectrum talent management: recruitment, workforce planning, performance management, succession planning, employee development, engagement, and DEI initiatives.
- Use HR analytics and workforce data to guide strategic decisions and measure program effectiveness.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws.
- Oversee retirement plans (401k), including vendor management, compliance, and fiduciary duties.
- Manage reporting and compliance activities (FLSA, I-9, EEO-1, payroll audits, employee status changes).
- Maintain HR policies, handbooks, org charts, and governance documentation.
- Conduct workplace investigations and handle sensitive employee matters confidentially and with integrity.
- Identify training needs; oversee leadership development and learning programs, ensuring compliance.
- Lead change management initiatives to support organizational transitions.
- Foster engagement, accountability, and ethical standards across the workforce.
- Manage external HR vendors for quality, compliance, and cost-efficiency.
- Design and manage competitive compensation and benefits programs aligned with business strategy.
- Streamline HR systems, policies, and processes to improve organizational effectiveness.
- Advise leadership and Board committees on human capital strategy, compensation, and benefits governance.
- Establish and maintain HR metrics to measure effectiveness, engagement, and cost management.
- Strategic leadership: align human capital strategy with organizational goals.
- Employment law & regulatory expertise: ensure compliance and mitigate risk.
- Talent management & workforce planning: build a strong, engaged workforce.
- Employee relations & conflict resolution: manage sensitive issues and investigations professionally.
- Strong business and HR acumen: problem-solving, critical thinking, and initiative.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in HR, Organizational Development, Business, or related field.
- SHRM-CP/SCP, PHR/SPHR, or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum 7 years progressive HR experience, including senior HR leadership or strategic HR roles.
- Experience in benefits administration, compensation planning, compliance management, and retirement plan oversight preferred.
- Nonprofit direct-service experience preferred.
