Shelterhouse is looking for a Human Resources Director who is ready to lead with integrity, empathy, and accountability while supporting an organization that serves the Greater Cincinnati community with purpose and heart.
This position plays a vital leadership role in shaping Shelterhouse’s people strategy and organizational culture. This is an exciting opportunity to influence how employees are supported, developed, and retained while ensuring equity, compliance, and operational excellence across all HR functions.
In this role, you will plan, direct, and oversee all aspects of human resources, including benefits administration, employee relations, recruitment, compliance, training, and policy development. You will partner closely with leadership and staff, offering trusted guidance, sound judgment, and a people first approach grounded in nonprofit best practices. Your work will directly impact employee engagement, retention, and the long-term sustainability of Shelterhouse’s mission.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design, administration, and compliance of all employee benefit programs, serving as the primary liaison with benefits, workers’ compensation, unemployment, and retirement vendors.
- Oversee core HR operations including recruitment, employee relations, performance management, job classification, promotions, transfers, and contract administration.
- Analyze and report on workforce metrics such as benefits, costs, turnover, staffing, absenteeism, compensation trends, applicant flow, and EEO compliance.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state employment laws while advising leadership on policy interpretation, best practices, and proper administration of FMLA and other leave programs.
- Develop and maintain HR policies, job descriptions, retention initiatives, and quarterly management training focused on compliance, performance, engagement, and workplace expectations.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred in HR or related field
- 3-5 years of experience in HR Management role
- Experience with a non-profit or small company preferred
- PHR or SPHR are strongly preferred.
