The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center (PCUEC), and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Job Summary
The HR Business Partner (HRBP) is responsible for aligning employees and management with Student Union business objectives. This position will support all HR operations work within their verticals. The HRBP maintains a high level of business literacy about their units’ midrange plans, its culture, and its needs. HRBPs may support with the following areas as needed: talent acquisition, payroll and benefits, employee onboarding, training and development, including assisting in the development of policies, SPOs projects. This position reports to the Associate Director, Human Resources of Student Union.
Duties and Responsibilities- Consults with line management, providing HR guidance when appropriate.
- Provides HR policy guidance and interpretation.
- Ability to support HR department goals and objectives, facilitate innovation and change in new and existing resources to meet the needs of Student Union mission, campus culture, and foster staff engagement.
- Ensures employees and the Student Union are in alignment and operating in accordance with the strategic plans of the Student Union, as well as in compliance with State, Federal, and local labor laws, regulations, etc.
- Identifies training needs for business units and individual executive coaching needs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Talent Acquisition and Retention- Establishes and leads standard recruiting and hiring practices and procedures in order to be compliant, and to recruit and hire an outstanding workforce.
- Meets with all other search committees to review sound recruiting policies, procedures, and expectations.
- Works with hiring committees and chairs on to review sound recruiting policies, procedures and expectations; recruitment, selection, interviewing, and recommendations to the hiring manager.
- Oversees the recruitment process in Frontline Education (Recruitment and Hiring platform for all employees, including volunteers, exempt and non-exempt full time, part-time, and student assistants for the corporation and onboarding and offboarding of corporation employees.
- Works closely with department managers or supervisors to ensure position descriptions, recruitments are completed in a proper and timely manner
- Upon request to hire verify with the HR Manager budget for positions
- Log and complete verifications of employment. Typical types of verification of employment and written letters as requested by current and former employees.
- Completes Accurate Background for employees to ensure the validity of each background check.
- Prepares offer letters, completely new hire paperwork and onboarding, including I-9 processing, person of interest form. etc.
- Develops an Onboarding and Offboarding Plan for all new employees.
- Enrolls, manages and ensures all employees are in compliance with California State University (CSU) Learning & Development requirements for employment.
- Provides necessary education and materials to student assistants and non-exempt/exempt employees employee manuals handbooks, policies/procedures for the corporation.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Management, Organizational Development or related field
- Minimum 3 years of HR experience leading HR functions for mid to large size organization.
- Three years of supervisory experience with personnel and employee support.
- Working knowledge of multiple human resource disciplines, terminations, including compensation practices, organizational diagnosis, benefits administration, diversity, performance management, employee development, safety training, and federal and state employment laws.
Preferred Qualifications- PHR, SHRM certification in HR
- Master's degree and 4-5 years of experience in college union and/or human resource department management and supervision
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)- Broad knowledge and experience in federal, state and local employment laws and best practices.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with all functions of HR including recruitment, compensation, benefits, performance management, termination, policy formulation, organizational planning and development, employee relations, safety and training.
- Strong process orientation and project management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects, delegate successfully, and manage with a high attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to listen and empathized with others, and anticipate, respond to the needs of the employees and business within a multi-cultural organization.
- Strong business acumen, creativity, and action oriented problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to support the Mission and Core Values of the Student Union corporation.
- Experience in computer applications such as: Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms, etc.) Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Work Requirements
- The position works in a wide variety of environments including both a typical office as well as an outdoors and indoor facility program-oriented environment.

- In general, the position works a schedule based on business needs 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday, may work evenings and weekends as required

Background Check and Fingerprinting
Student Union employees are required to undergo and complete a successful background check that includes verification of employment and education, as well as a check of criminal records for employment. Candidates for positions where the employee will come in regular contact with minors and cash management will be required to be fingerprinted. This policy includes emergency hires and may also be applicable to volunteers depending on the work performed.
In some cases, the background check will include a credit check and/or a Department of Motor Vehicles check, as well as a check of licenses and certificates when applicable. All background checks are conducted through the Student Union third-party vendor, Accurate Background.
