We are seeking an experienced Human Resources Manager based in our Philadelphia office. Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the HR Manager will serve as a key member of our HR team and take a lead role in HR compliance, employee relations, performance management, professional development, and policy administration as it relates to our business professional, paralegal, and non-partner attorney populations.
Key Responsibilities
HR Compliance & Legal Requirements
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
- Maintain current knowledge of employment law changes and assess impact on firm policies and practices
- Conduct compliance audits and recommend corrective actions
- Manage EEOC charges, unemployment claims, and other regulatory matters
- Oversee I-9 compliance, E-Verify processes, and employment eligibility verification
- Coordinate with internal employment counsel when necessary
- Maintain confidential employee records in compliance with retention requirements
Employee Relations
- Serve as primary point of contact for employee relations matters involving business professionals, paralegals and non-partner attorneys
- Conduct thorough investigations into workplace complaints including harassment, discrimination, and policy violations
- Provide guidance to managers on progressive discipline, performance management, and corrective action
- Counsel employees on workplace issues, policy interpretations, and available resources
- Partner with management on sensitive employee matters requiring discretion and confidentiality
- Conduct exit interviews and analyze turnover trends
Policy Administration & Implementation
- Administer and interpret HR policies, ensuring consistent application across all departments
- Update employee handbook and policies to reflect legal changes and best practices
- Develop and deliver policy training sessions for managers and staff
- Coordinate with benefits team on policy-related benefit issues
Performance Management & Professional Development
- Support performance review processes for business professionals and paralegals;
- Partner with administrative department heads and talent development on succession planning, upskilling, and career development initiatives;
- Assist in developing competency frameworks and career progression paths for business professionals and paralegals;
- Support onboarding process and programs for new hires in professional roles
Team Leadership, Collaboration & Reporting
- Collaborate with HR Director on strategic initiatives and department goals;
- Work closely with Finance, IT, Marketing, and Operations teams on cross-functional projects;
- Collaborate with legal recruitment team and talent acquisition manager on synergizing the hiring processes and candidate experience;
- Track and analyze HR metrics including turnover, time-to-fill, and employee satisfaction
- Prepare regular reports on compliance activities and employee relations trends
- Support annual compliance reporting requirements
Required Qualifications
Education, Experience and Technical Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field;
- Minimum five to seven (5-7) years of progressive HR experience, preferably in professional services or legal environment;
- 2+ years of supervisory experience;
- PHR, SHRM-CP, or equivalent HR certification preferred;
- Expert knowledge of federal and state employment laws
- Proficiency with HRIS systems (experience with UKG, Elite, Aderant, or similar legal industry systems preferred)
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel for data analysis
