Job Summary
This is a highly visible, hands-on leadership position. As a department of one, the VP of HR will serve as both strategist and operator balancing long-term organizational needs with the day-to-day realities of HR. You will be a trusted advisor to the CEO and a key member of the senior leadership team, helping us build a best-in-class culture while supporting our workforce. As the company scales, this role will also design and grow the HR function, including building and leading a team to support our expanding operations.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Partner with the CEO and leadership team on organizational planning, culture, and workforce strategy.
- Support growth through acquisition, including integration of new employees and practices.
Talent Management & Development
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, and retention strategies for both exempt and non-exempt employees.
- Create and manage employee training and development initiatives.
Employee Relations
- Serve as a trusted resource for employees and managers, resolving issues with fairness and professionalism.
- Foster a culture of respect, accountability, and performance.
Compliance & Policies
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and DOT employment regulations.
- Oversee employee handbook, HR policies, and workplace practices.
Compensation, Benefits & Payroll
- Oversee payroll administration to ensure accurate and timely processing.
- Manage benefits administration in partnership with Finance and external providers.
- Continuously evaluate competitiveness and efficiency of compensation and benefits programs.
Hands-On Execution
- Personally manage the day-to-day HR operations (hiring, onboarding, terminations, investigations, HRIS, payroll oversight, etc.).
- Build scalable processes and systems as the company grows.
- Design and lead the eventual expansion of the HR team as organizational needs increase.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive HR leadership experience, with a mix of strategic and operational responsibilities.
- Experience in industries with a large non-exempt workforce strongly preferred (transportation, logistics, manufacturing, entertainment production, etc.).
- Proven ability to thrive as a “department of one” balancing big-picture strategy with tactical execution.
- Direct experience overseeing payroll processes and vendors/contractors.
- Deep knowledge of HR laws and regulations, including DOT compliance.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to build trust at every level of the organization.
- Hands-on, low-ego leadership style with a drive for efficiency and excellence.
- Bachelor’s degree required; HR certification (SPHR/SHRM-SCP) strongly preferred.
