Position Summary

The HR Manager will serve as the sole HR professional for the company, owning all non-recruiting

human resources functions. This role is responsible for employee relations, compliance, benefits

administration, payroll coordination (aside of processing), performance management, and policy

development. The ideal candidate is hands-on, highly organized, and experienced in California

employment law, capable of operating independently and advising leadership on HR matters and risk.

Key Responsibilities

Employee Onboarding & Offboarding

• Coordinate new hire onboarding, orientation, and required documentation

• Complete and maintain I-9, W-4, and policy acknowledgments

• Manage employee records in HR Information System

• Lead the transition from paper-based processes to electronic document submission

• Coordinate offboarding, exit documentation, and final pay processes

• Conduct or coordinate exit interviews

• Work with the legal team on complex on-boarding or off-boarding cases

• Assist with job classification (exempt/non-exempt, hourly, salary, etc)

Employee Relations

• Serve as the primary HR point of contact for employees

• Address employee concerns, complaints, and policy questions

• Conduct workplace investigations and maintain documentation

• Advise leadership on performance management, disciplinary actions, and terminations

• Support conflict resolution and manager coaching

Compliance & Labor Law

• Ensure compliance with federal, California, and local employment laws, including security

industry requirements (BSIS)

• Manage leaves of absence

• Maintain required postings, notices, and compliance records

• Monitor employment law changes and recommend policy updates

• Support audits and risk mitigation efforts

• Manage workers’ compensation compliance

Benefits Administration

• Administer Company-offered benefit plans (currently health, dental & vision)

• Coordinate open enrollment and employee education

• Manage benefits eligibility, life events, and terminations

• Serve as liaison with benefits brokers and vendors

• Resolve employee benefits questions and issues

Payroll & Timekeeping Support

• Explain timekeeping and payroll procedures to newly hired employees

• Review payroll data periodically for accuracy and compliance

• Develop, implement, and manage the PTO tracking program

• Address and resolve payroll- and timekeeping-related employee inquiries

Policies, Procedures & Documentation

• Review, incorporating respective vendors, and maintain the employee handbook

• Maintain HR templates, forms, and documentation

• When needed, develop and enforce HR policies and procedures

• Ensure consistent application of policies across the organization

Performance & Compensation Support

• Support performance review processes and documentation

• Advise on corrective action plans and performance improvement plans

• Support compensation reviews, pay adjustments, and bonuses

Training, Safety & Risk

• Coordinate required compliance and harassment prevention training

• Track training completion and certifications

• Manage industry-based compliance for training

• Support workplace safety initiatives and incident reporting

• Coordinate return-to-work processes

HR Systems, Reporting & Leadership Support

• Maintain HRIS data integrity and reporting

• Generate HR metrics and reports as needed

• Maintain confidential personnel files

• Advise leadership on HR strategy, employee issues, and organizational changes

• Serve as HR liaison with legal counsel and external vendors

Qualifications

• 5–8+ years of progressive HR experience

• Strong working knowledge of California employment law

• Experience operating as a standalone HR professional preferred

• Excellent judgment, discretion, and communication skills

• HR certification (PHR, SHRM-CP, or higher) preferred
